Abstract

In September 2013, President Barack Obama spoke to delegates assembled at the United Nations about what he perceived as America’s unique role in world affairs. The theme of his address had a familiar ring: “I believe America is exceptional,” he proclaimed. “Furthermore, its special – perhaps unique – place in the family of nations gives it the responsibility and mandate to take a leading role in world affairs.”
