‘This prospering country is your ornament’: Emerson and the ‘Instructive’ Value of the Cosmopolitan Project
Abstract
Analyzes important Emersonian texts to elucidate Emerson’s economic cosmopolitanism, placing the development of that idea in historical context. Argues that understanding how Emerson interpreted the notion of economic cosmopolitanism can help reconcile his Transcendentalist philosophy with his social activities.
