Broken Images
Abstract
Considers the strangeness of Liber Amoris in terms of Hazlitt’s familiar style. Claims Hazlitt posits the value of even the most trifling objects in the experience of subjectivity. Discusses one example in detail, viz., the breaking of a statue of Napoleon, which exemplifies at once the fragility of the material artifact and its animating power precisely as something breakable or broken.
