John Henry Newman and the Spirit of Old Rome

Abstract

Challenges prevailing ideas regarding Newman’s theory of travel. Suggests that by situating his correspondence and early theological tracts in the context of popular Romantic-era travel narratives it is possible to see how these writings influenced his ideas about the spiritual journey that led to his conversion to Roman Catholicism in 1845.
