Abstract

Explores Ruskin’s complicated attitudes toward the idea of being famous, noting that for most of his life he was interested in making others famous, not pursuing fame himself. Suggests that by the time he came to publishing Praeterita Ruskin had reconciled himself to the notion of being famous among his contemporaries, who he thought might find his life a source of both pleasure and education.
