A Minute Stretching into Centuries: Macaulay, English, and India

Abstract

Using Macaulay’s “Minute” as a touchstone, examines the situation in India in the nineteenth and twenty-first centuries, noting numerous parallels; believes the desire for imperial expansion of the earlier age is similar to the contemporary trend toward globalization, and in both cases the Indian people find themselves submitting to the use of English language and adoption of Western ideals.
