Claims that among the female figures Pater discusses in his work, a few serve as vehicles for a disturbing enlightenment, challenging the onlooker with their detached amusement and range of knowledge. Examines three of these figures: Mona Lisa, the Empress Faustina, and Marguerite of Navarre.
