Abstract

Challenges conventional views of Emerson as a liberal, demonstrating that his treatment of themes such as belief, tolerance, justice, and selfdevelopment are frequently incompatible with his liberal forebears, Locke and Mill. Seeks a middle ground in assessing Emerson as a thinker without idolizing or castigating him for his supposed liberalism.
