Notes how essays in this special issue focus on various aspects of writing about empire and imperialism in the 1800s and early 1900s: missionary publishing and martyrdom; land law in Ireland and India; gorillas, cannibals, and “category confusion” in African exploration narratives; uses of the sublime in African exploration narratives; the heroization of General Gordon in the press; women’s concentration camp narratives during the Boer War; and the emergence of a critical discourse of suburbanization in late Victorian and early modern prose.
