Margaret Fuller, Prescient and Present

Abstract

Reviews recent scholarship on Fuller as a prelude to discussing the books by Fleischmann and Hudspeth. Also reviews Fuller’s career, noting that her style can be difficult; claims, however, that Fuller’s contemporaries were less put off by her style than by the radical nature of her ideas. Summarizes the essays in Fleischmann’s volume, indicating how each author has claim to expertise in writing about Fuller. Commends Hudspeth, editor of the six-volume Letters of Fuller, for his judgment in choosing letters for this new, abbreviated collection.
