From Sagely Wisdom to Supervision: Nightingale as Sage and Nurse

Abstract

Explores ways Victorian women produced intellectual prose writing in a period when the “intellectual” was resolutely gendered masculine. Examines Nightingale’s access to and appropriation of sites of textual authority, arguing that two apparently unrelated Nightingale texts, Cassandra and Notes on Nursing, articulate related concerns about women’s place in Victorian culture.
