Nonviolence and Nationalism in Leigh Hunt’s Early Liberal Rhetoric

Abstract

Claims a survey of Leigh Hunt’s prose dating from his Examiner period through his later career reveals the liberal inclination to denounce harmful and violent practices of almost every kind. Believes his advocacy for the Greek revolution belies the problematic nature of liberal nationalism generally, and looks more and more anomalous given the increasingly nonviolent tenor of his later works.
