Victorian Precursors of Freud: Deromanticizing Byron

Abstract

Argues that modern techniques aimed at correcting excesses of heroworship generally ascribed to Victorian biographers were actually anticipated by a number of nineteenth-century writers. Scrutinizes biographies of Lord Byron by Emilio Castelar, R.B.W. Noel, and Karl Elze to illustrate this claim.
