The Use of Arnold in a Darwinian World

Abstract

Measures Arnold’s theory of culture against ideas about human nature in a post-Darwinian world. Believes much of what Arnold posited about the ability of an entire nation to improve itself is obsolete. Nevertheless, concludes that Arnold’s exhortations toward self-improvement and communal values have merit still, and would be approved by Darwin.
