Did Arnold Believe in God?

Abstract

An essay originally presented as a talk at a conference on Arnold in 1993. Reviews Arnold’s writings to extract an answer to the question found in the essay’s title, noting that “God” and “religion” are unfavorable topics among late-twentieth-century scholars. Concludes that Arnold did believe in a Deity, but not the traditional Christian God.
