The Origin of Species as Rhetoric
Abstract
Examines the rhetorical structure of Origin of Species to highlight methods of argument Darwin used to make his case for evolution. Finds him dependent on classical models such as Cicero, but also influenced by eighteenth- and nineteenth-century notions of argumentation. Makes a case that Darwin was indirectly influenced by Hugh Blair’s 1873 Lectures on Rhetoric and Belle Lettres.
