Review of John Lucas, England and Englishness (1990)

Abstract

Generally favorable assessment of a book that uses the work of poets of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to gauge the changing meaning of “Englishness” over two hundred years. Finds Lucas too dependent on the work of Raymond Williams, and faults him for failing to examine any work by women.
