Finds Levine’s book thin, ill-argued, and ultimately disappointing, a setback to feminist studies. On the other hand, believes Purvis makes a real contribution to understanding the lives of women in an oppressive culture; finds her particularly good at focusing on both gender and class as determinants in the treatment of women in Victorian England.
