Provides a summary of Weisbuch’s analysis of ways American writers from Emerson to James attempted to establish a uniquely American literature. Believes Weisbuch is at his best in tracing general trends in influence and reaction, but that his arguments showing how individual American works are intended as responses to specific British writings are less convincing.
