Abstract

Considers Carpenter’s study of George Eliot’s concept of history well researched and well argued, though finds at times she is too intent on reading the novels in a fashion that suits her thesis. Admits Cottom’s poststructuralist reading of Eliot’s work is disturbing for readers who appreciate the conventional view of the novelist, but persuasive in its analysis of character and language. Praises Welsh for explaining why a subject such as blackmail would intrigue Eliot and her readers; believes his reading of Eliot’s novels involving incidents of blackmail is helpful in explaining the continuing relevance of her work.
