Abstract

Finds merit in both studies. Praises Postlethwaite for her ability to demonstrate how nine important Victorians sought scientific explanations for human behavior that would also account for humankind’s moral and spiritual nature; notes that on occasion she fails to recognize some of the inconsistencies in her argument. Believes Loesberg’s special strength lies in his ability to demonstrate the interconnectedness of philosophical systems with the life stories of those writers who developed them.
