Finds fault with both books, but sees both as ultimately useful to scholars of Wilde and the Edwardian period. Believes Gagnier relies too heavily on twentieth-century theorists without providing an overarching theme to her assessment of Wilde’s writings. By contrast, Rose seems unaware of contemporary theory, which may have helped him provide a framework for his compendium of information on the Edwardian age.
