The Function of Arnold’s Criticism at the Present Time

Abstract

Asserts that Arnold is the most important nineteenth-century figure in shaping the course of modern literary criticism; the continuing references to him in works by twentieth-century critics of all ideological persuasions is living testament to that fact. Notes ways Arnold’s search for authority is supported or repudiated by literary theorists of the twentieth century. Believes it is wrong to view Arnold’s insistence on cultural elitism and moral norms as requirements for judging literature’s value, but says he should still be read to appreciate the artistry of his criticism.
