Abstract

Re-examines Arnold’s distinctive method of thinking, by which he attempts to balance alternative and often opposing thoughts. Illustrates the continuing tensions he felt regarding the ultimate purpose of literature and literary criticism. Extensive discussion of his correspondence with Clough, wherein he serves as Clough’s literary advisor, coaching him about appropriate subjects for his poems. Explains how Arnold’s resolution to the dilemma he outlined in the 1853 Preface drove him to the subjects of his later poems.
