Abstract

Claims these three books have widely different approaches to the same subject. Devotes much attention to Fraser’s study of the relationship between religious and aesthetic ideas, noting how key Victorians such as Newman, Arnold, Hopkins, and Ruskin sought, sometimes unsuccessfully, to reconcile these concepts. Believes Vance’s study enhances scholarly understanding of novelists Charles Kingsley and Thomas Hughes. Judges a number of the essays in Malmgreen’s volume helpful in explaining how religion influenced women’s lives over nearly two centuries.
