Review Essay: A Late Father of the Church
Abstract
Praises Livingston for his scholarship and his penetrating analysis of the religious questions that permeate Arnold’s writing. Finds him deficient, however, in making clear the case for Arnold as a Christian, and for misusing terms that would have had different meaning for Arnold and his contemporaries. Finds Scott’s assessment of Arnold sound but at times controversial. Observes that Scott’s essays on other religious figures and philosophers are also enlightening.
