Defends Unto This Last as a major critique of Victorian society, but one in which Ruskin exercises satiric rather than prophetic tendencies. The Victorians, who had an aversion to satire, misunderstood his aims because they were skeptical of his methods. Catalogs the techniques of satire Ruskin uses in his work.
