The Emerging Carlyle
Abstract
Discusses the importance of the Collected Letters volumes in helping scholars conduct a revaluation not only of the Carlyles but of the Victorian era, but speculates that the penchant to believe received opinion – much of it incorrect – stands in the way of such an effort. Also comments favorably on the works of Tennyson and Rosenberg.
