Abstract

Summarizes Ringe’s study of the Gothic impulse in a dozen American authors from Charles Brockden Brown to Nathaniel Hawthorne. Believes Ringe does a creditable job distinguishing Gothic literature from mainstream fiction of the nineteenth century, but criticizes him for failing to analyze reasons why writers would choose to diverge in this way.
