Praises him for revealing the many inconsistencies between Carlyle’s philosophy and his everyday behavior; believes Kaplan admires Carlyle’s works but not the man who wrote them. Notes that this biography stands in stark contrast to poststructuralist criticism, because it demonstrates how much modern society relies on the teleological premises Carlyle promoted in his work.
