Matthew Arnold and Edgar Quinet

Abstract

Examines ways the French writer might have influenced Arnold outside the most obvious one, Arnold’s borrowings from Quinet in “The Church at Brou.” Amplifies comments made in 1908 by Charles Cestre. Believes Arnold and Quinet shared many ideas about the decline of modern society, but fulfilled different roles in their respective countries.
