Abstract

Notes the importance of astronomical imagery for many Victorian writers. Finds it throughout Clough’s work, noting its appropriateness since Clough was constantly struggling with religious issues. Argues that the use of such imagery helps readers understand Clough’s religious position, in which he comes to accept a form of agnosticism.
