Abstract

Argues for the continuity of theme among four Arnold poems, seeing them collectively as a precursor to T.S. Eliot’s The Wasteland. Like Eliot, Arnold accumulates fragmentary descriptions to suggest how the modern world contrasts with earlier times when society was more coherently organized.
