Abstract

Applauds the boldness with which Auerbach approaches her topic, a revaluation of the image of women in Victorian literature. Finds her argument persuasive and her examples from a wide range of literature useful in supporting her thesis. Faults her for occasionally offering strained readings. Concludes with speculations about the validity and impact of reader-response criticism on future literary study.
