A Note on Arnold Scholarship: Winter 1982 to Winter 1983

Abstract

Contrasts the work of William Buckler’s On the Poetry of Matthew Arnold (1982) and Joseph Carroll’s The Cultural Theory of Matthew Arnold (1982) to show how they offer radically different views of the writer. Suggests Arnold was the apostle of variety, the other claims he was the exponent of a coherent system. Also summarizes articles on Arnold in Richard Levine’s two volumes of The Victorian Experience (1982), William Spanos’ essay in boundary2 on the Harvard core curriculum, and Benjamin Reid’s essay on T.S. Eliot in the Sewanee Review in which Arnold plays a prominent role. Lists and annotates twenty-six additional articles.
