Arnold and Immortality

Abstract

Extends the argument originally made by Kenneth Allott in 1973 about Arnold’s concept of immortality. Argues Arnold may have believed in immortality in 1860, but as his prose writings demonstrate, by the 1870s he had abandoned his belief in the doctrine.
