Matthew Arnold and Buddhism

Abstract

Traces Arnold’s longstanding interest in Buddhism and his concurrent rejection of Hindu religious thought. Demonstrates how Arnold is influenced more by Buddhist thought in Empedocles on Etna than by the philosophy of its title character. Sees in Arnold’s 1887 essay “Amiel” a recantation of his earlier favorable reaction to Buddhism in favor of a more optimistic philosophy about human destiny.
