Abstract

Praises the new Wessex Edition for making Hardy’s work available, but faults the inconsistency of its critical apparatus. By contrast, finds Gibson’s edition of the poems superbly done, and approves of Puk’s work as serviceable. Believes the Collected Letters will be the definitive work on that body of literature, although the letters are dull. Claims Taylor’s fine edition is similarly disappointing because Hardy put little of himself into these notes.
