Hebraism, Hellenism, and Harold Frederic’s Theron Ware
Abstract
Argues that The Damnation of Theron Ware is actually a philosophical novel in which the hero is exposed to different systems of metaphysics and ethics. Claims Arnold’s distinction between Hebraism and Hellenism in Culture and Anarchy plays an important role in helping to define and distinguish major characters in the work. Believes Frederic may have intended to mock Arnold’s high-minded attitudes.
