Matthew Arnold and Liberal Unionism: Consensus and Discord

Abstract

Examines the emergence of the Liberal Unionist movement to determine the level of homogeneity among those who led the secession of this faction from the British Liberal Party. Argues that Arnold’s writings can be a good gauge of the principles of the movement and the causes for secession. Debunks critical wisdom that Arnold was an imperialist; demonstrates, however, that Arnold did not share the opinions of Liberal Unionist leaders regarding property rights or the attitude of superiority of the English over the Irish. Claims Arnold sympathized with the Liberal Unionists because he believed the future of the United Kingdom lay in a society free of artificial class distinctions.
