Abstract

Offers a context for reading both books by explaining how the concept of social history is being revised to include examinations of women’s issues. Comments briefly on the essayists’ treatment of topics such as pregnancy, prostitution, education, and domestic relations. Believes these essays provide a strong factual basis for re-examining Victorian literature.
