Abstract

Traces parallels between Arnold’s writings and those of the Jewish philosopher Mordecai Kaplan, who was admittedly influenced by Arnold. Discusses ways both thought of God as a power outside themselves; both understood the power of parable and metaphor. Believes both held an essentially Romantic idea of the Deity, and were more concerned with the effect of belief than with any specific dogma.
