Arnold, Newman, and T. S. Eliot: A Note on the Disappearance of God

Abstract

Argues that Arnold’s writings on religion may have indirectly spurred Newman to write a series of essays and sermons highly critical of modern trends that depersonalized the Deity and questioned God’s existence. Claims Eliot follows the same argument in After Strange Gods by criticizing liberal trends in society.
